We could not have asked for a better day for our celebration. It was Father’s Day, but some would have much more to celebrate.  The sky was blue, and there was a gentle breeze as the Greaves Adventist Academy graduating classes began to arrive with their families at the Westmount Adventist Church, which has graciously hosted this event as in past years.  One could hear the nervous laughs as the graduates put on their gowns and caps, a feat not for the faint of heart.  As usual, everyone had a request or question for Ms. Cynthia, who found a solution like any other day in school. To quote one student, “Ms. Cynthia is like the general store; she has everything you need.”  What a wonderful sentiment. This undoubtedly personifies what Adventist education is all about: meeting the needs of students in all areas of life. The range of emotions felt this day was vast. Throughout the ceremony, attendees smiled, laughed, cried, and even joined in the Kindergarteners’ performance as they animatedly sang their little hearts out. There was a feeling of joy and satisfaction to watch the graduates give of themselves to make the day one to remember.  We are sure the conference board members will attest who made themselves available for the ceremony.

It was a bitter/sweet day because while we were reaping the benefits of a day well orchestrated by the homeroom teachers and volunteers, meticulously overseen by Ms. Cummings, knowing it would be the last one, she would be there for us.  But she did not want us to say it was goodbye but rather “fare well until we meet again.”  We were so fortunate, but much more. We were blessed beyond measure to have her as our principal. Many may not know that while Ms. Cummings was our principal for three years, she also held the position of FULL-TIME math teacher for two of those years.  This was no easy task; it’s downright impossible, but God, yet she worked tirelessly. Any full-time teacher will tell you that doing this job is time-consuming, and yet she was able to do it as well as the administrative tasks a principal must do- evidence that God was with her, giving strength and holding her up with His righteous right hand. Evidence that Greaves Adventist Academy is indeed the apple of His eye.  She brought all her discipline and various talents to the table and showed us what serving meant. We want to say to Ms. Keisha Williams-Cummings, “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, and as you move on the move into a position where many more can benefit from your expertise, we wish you God’s richest blessings.”

Our resident, Ms. Grandma, will not return to us next year. Ms. St Bryce joined our school many years ago and worked with six principals at three locations.  She showed her commitment to Adventist education by sending her son and grandson to Greaves. When her grandson called her grandma, his friends soon joined in, and it grew from there. When new students arrived, joining in became natural because everyone else did so. We will miss answering “Where is grandma?” during break time.  We say thank you for your service and commitment to Greaves.

Later that week, graduation celebrations were also held at our sister school in Sartigan. We also had to say goodbye to our dear colleague, Professor Luz Ahumada. Greaves Adventist Academy, Sartigan campus, was equally blessed to have had Professor Luz serve the school diligently in several capacities, including principal. With her ever-so-quiet demeanor, she worked tirelessly, always working unto the Lord. We wish her all the best in her well-earned retirement.

Greaves Adventist Academy is somewhat stepping into a new era with an incoming principal. Somewhat, because Madame Falla is coming back to us from retirement, New because she brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience that she has acquired.  While working at our very own Burman University, she taught students aspiring to be educators how to become teachers. As teachers, we are lifelong learners, and now we have a lecturer at our disposal. God is good, isn’t He?  We eagerly and warmly welcome back Madame Falla and look forward to God’s continued blessings and guidance at Greaves Adventist Academy as Adventist Education is given its place in the evangelistic thrust in the Quebec Conference.

So, with heavy but full hearts, we bid adieu to two great Greaves servant leaders and welcome our new principal and to the new staff members who will be joining us for the coming school year as we continue the vital work of serving God and restoring His perfect image.
